Permanent (2018-2022) was an intensive, practice-based research- and grassroot project that aimed to develop an embedded and permanently affordable mixed-use infrastructure in Brussels that combines culture with housing and community facilities.

By investigating anti-speculative understandings of ownership and community-based legal and financial models proposed by the cooperative- and commons economy, Permanent wanted to disrupt the status quo in which culture acts as a driver for gentrification and profit-driven development, and reclaim its symbolic capital to push for more solidary, inclusive and just cities.

In 2022, Permanent merged into an academic research project on Community Welfare Mixed Infrastructures (Welcomin, 2022-2025) at the VUB University in Brussels, Cosmopolis Research Centre for Urban Studies, funded by Innoviris. That same year, the spatial trajectory came to a close with the publication A Playbook of Hospitality.
